music videos--how are clients marketing them?

Trying to get a clue about music video possibilities.

I read a long time ago (I think on this forum) that television companies like CMT, MTV2, etc. would not accept digitally produced music videos. Is this true? If not, have they drawn a line between HD and SD?

For those of you in the music video side of things, just what are your clients doing with the finished product? Web?

Seems like hundreds of questions, and I apologize, but I really appreciate the help!

Hi Lorinda
From what I've seen of most smaller bands and music videos, they use them for self promotion on the web and for their agents.

They also use them to show to labels and to prospective touring sites to show the bookers what kind of band they are.

Hmm; most of our prospective dreamers--I mean, clients, are thinking VH1. Looks like I'd have some convincing to do.

Videos for the avenues you both mentioned sound like pretty low-budget deals--no one would shell out more than $500 for a promo, would they?

If it was just me, it'd be one thing, but I've got two talented guys wishing I could find them some creative work that actually pays.

Maybe if I scrounged up enough of 'em...

...more thinking...

Thanks so much for the info!

Yes, and probably much more than that. I'd rather pay $5000 for a video that gets me twenty gigs, than $500 for one that doesn't get me any.

I agree with you in theory, but have to doubt the reality of it--seems most of the artists/bands I know about have serious cash shortages and no sponsors.

Yet...there's only one way to find out, now, isn't there? Thanks, Dylan; I'll give it a run!

My survey data is a little thin but an artist I did a showcase for last year (CD and web) left me a message recently saying he's got work from 6-7 of every 10 CDs he has sent out. I'm sure you recognize what an incredible number that is. Testimony like that should be persuasive. You can listen to the call at

Hey David,

That was interesting. I was stuck in the mindset of bigger-production, storyline music videos rather than taping live performances. Not the creative challenge, but certainly more affordable for the artist.

Slow on the take, but I'm getting there. Thanks for taking the time to help!!
