Facts Concerning Canon Camcorder Warranty

There is a lot of incorrect and/or misleading information on the Internet about Canon warranty of camcorders. I would like to share what I have learned during the process of trying to buy a GL2.

1. The Canon warranty (1-year parts and labor) is NOT transferrable:
http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/con...7&modelid=7512

2. Canon will honor the warranty if you have the sales receipt and the original warranty card that comes in the box. As long as the camcorder is a USA version with a USA warranty, it doesn't matter if the dealer was an authorized Canon dealer or not.
This is according to the California Canon Repair Center (949-753-4200).
There is also a Canon Repair Center in New Jersey (732-521-7007).

3. For non-warranty repairs, there is a minimum charge of $240.00 + sales tax + shipping IF you decide to go ahead with the repair. There is NO charge for an estimate (of course you have to pay shipping).

I've moved your thread to our business forum since it isn't a
"classified". Thanks for the info.

Where does it say it's not transferable?

... it's near the bottom
Quote:

THIS LIMITED WARRANTY SHALL NOT EXTEND TO ANYONE OTHER THAN THE ORIGINAL PURCHASER OF ANY DV CAMCORDER, OR THE PERSON FOR WHOM IT WAS PURCHASED AS A GIFT ...

Ah, thanks.

I suppose one way to work around the transfer problem is to claim that you received the camcorder as a "gift". Of course, you would probably still need a copy of the original sales receipt.

Additionally, keep in mind that the tape transport section itself is limited in coverage to 90 days, not the full year on the rest of the camcorder.
