PROTECTING an IDEA

What is the best way to protect an idea I have for a television show (series).

I would like to take my idea to a major network...just want to protect myself from turning the idea over to them for nothing!

Please browse the "Taking Care of Business" threads as this has been covered many times there.

In general, it is difficult to protect an idea.

However, you can solidify your stake in the idea by expressing it as a written treatment, script or bible. These you can register with WGA. You can also help your cause by getting representation.

Could a Non-Disclosure-Agreement be helpful in this case. I signed an NDA once before a friend of a friend would show me his 'invention' that he was seeking technical assistance with.

I'm just as curious as Ron because I have 'ideas' that I feel are marketable but don't want them stolen either.

I came across an article on CNN.com recently where one person was claiming that the Apprentice was his/her idea and to back it up, she had registered the idea with the Writers Guild Of America. I guess, you can try and register your concept with them.

And on the other hand, I had people get me to sign NDA's for the stupidest ideas that you couldn't pay me to steal.
