Can I use photos I videotape from library archives?

Can I use still photos I videotape from library archives? I've done that in the past while working in public TV with just an OK from the librarian and an on-air credit.

Any input? Thanks.

I am not a lawyer ... it would depend on the photograph. A Civil War image by Matthew Brady is most likely in the public domain and could be used without any problem. But try that with a photo by Ansel Adams or Edward Weston and you'll need permission from the present copyright owners, most likely their estates.
