Has anyone actually got this to work? I keep ending up with 12fps video. Should I put best quality on the upper field layer? It's been frustrating since I've rendered this 10 second clip at least 30 times.

When you create the first comp in After Effects, what's your frame rate setting? It should be either 29.97 for NTSC or 25 for PAL.

The same frame rates should apply to the second comp also.

Yes, both are at 29.97 NTSC. It's strange I don't understand it.

When you import your rendered Quicktime back into your editor, the frame rate on your file settings (codec, fps, etc) read 12 fps?

Weird one....sounds like a QT or AE bug if your comp settings are correct to begin with.

Wait...instead of dropping the first comp into the second comp, try this--

Create an adjustment layer over your two clips (upper and lower field dominance) and apply the posterize time effect to that. Render out as 29.97 (double check your frame rate in the render que, it may be changed to 12...either that or it's changed in the Quicktime codec dialog box itself).

Or render out the combined clips...and then open up a new comp and apply the posterize time effect to that (break that part of the tutorial up into two different renders, essentially).

Another thing...in the render que, make sure you select NONE for field dominance (this will leave you with a progressive frame look)...I didn't see that mentioned in the tut, although I scanned over it to see what your problem could be.

I'm an idiot. I rendered the final as a lossless avi (uncompressed) and when I played the file my computer could only playback half the frames. I didn't know it defaulted to that.

Yeah, there's not enough processing power to play back uncompressed files.

In the future you may want to create a lower res preview from your uncompressed file post-render if AE's RAM preview doesn't suffice.
