Avoiding silhouetting

hey my teacher made us watch "the rookie"
and i was wodnering, how do they shoot those outdoor shots where this crazy bright sky looks nice and blue, not over exposed, and the people are also moderately exposed with no darkening of their faces and such.

how is this effect created? (lighting?)

or is it a camera setting or both?

pls be specific.

thx arthu

They add light to the subject, perhaps through a bounce card or with an HMI light. The brighter you make your subject, the more you can stop down your exposure. Stopping down the exposure brings out more color in the sky.

Also be sure to be shooting away from the sun, with the sun at your back. That'll give you the bluest skies.
