Frame Mode, 25 shutter, and interlaced

I have a PAL XL1 and I'm really satisfied with it's frame mode. The issue about the frame mode being to soft hasn't really concerned me before. However, reading many posts about this issue brought me to test it against interlaced and 25 shutter (i)....


And really, I can't se any special softness or loss of resolution at all. Maybe it's my TV (I think not, - it's a sony with "black crystals" or what the're called). Or maybe it's because I use the PAL version XL1. I can agree with that my picture is a little soft, but it's that soft in all modes. Can it be that the NTSC model has much bigger difference?



Frame mode, interlaced, and 25 shutter - In the same movie for blow up to film etc.?

I've heard that people using PD150 use it's 25 shutter mode for film look. When I tested the 25 shutter mode with the XL1 it gave me results similar to the frame mode. Of course, in much motion the 25 shutter mode motion blured much more. I still think the frame mode is a better mode. But the modes didn't show any difference in quality. Only motion. And at shots perfect for both modes, they could be combined without the audience thinking - "something changed, right?"

Both modes have their own weak and strong points. I consider using them both in the same movie at different times. For example, if it's too dark, then I'll consider using the 25 shutter, and when I have a scene with much motion I'll go with frame mode. When I do some pans I'll consider 25 shutter.

Still questions pop up...

1. When (if) blowing up to film, does it matter that you've combined the different modes? If they deinterlace frame mode at the lab it'll look weird (so I've heard). But they won't do that of course. However when I shoot 25 shutter or just plain interlaced, they need to deinterlace it... that makes me think; - Do not place any dissolves between frame mode footage and 25 shutter footage (or plain interlaced). If you switch modes, always do straight cuts.

2. Also, about the 25 shutter mode... When you deinterlace it (haven't had time to try that out yet), is it really changed much? It feels like it's already "kind of" pre deinterlaced in the camera. Is that true? And... the PD150 can also record 25 shutter, but I don't think they refer to it as a "digital effect" as the XL1 (first version) does. Is there any difference?
