24p DV from non-24p deck?
 

I'm working with someone who's using a Panasonic DVX-100. We're going to shoot a scene in 24p mode, which I am going to edit in Vegas 5. I have a Panasonic AG-DV1000 DV deck which only does standard 29.97i NTSC.

Will a standard NTSC dv deck play back a 24p DV tape? If I capture over firewire from the NTSC deck, will Vegas correctly identify the footage as 24p?

Or do I need to capture from the camera in VCR mode?

It doesn't matter what deck you use to capture the footage. What's recorded is what's recorded. I myself use an older Sony 1-chipper as a deck.

Just remember to use the appropriate 24p setting when capturing into Vegas, and you'll be fine. Check the whitepaper...

If it's recorded on DV tape, it's gotta be NTSC format, which, by definition is 29.97fps. The Panny writes it's native 24fps acquired images onto the tape with 3:2 or 2:3:3:2 pulldown, which means the 24fps footage has frames duplicated and inserted into the footage until 30fps is achieved for recording.

When you import this footage into Vegas, you have the option to convert it back to true 24 fps or to leave it as "telecine'd", which is the 30 fps version. If you're gonna play the final video on any kind of NTSC device, like a TV, you're better off leaving it telecine'd. Most DVD players and modern TV sets will telecine 24 fps native footage anyway. The only time you'd want to leave it in native 24fps footage is if you're gonna transcode to film.
