How to Build a Showreel?

Whats the best way to build a show-reel from scratch? Like what sort of shots would you use & how would you set them up (if you're not working on a production)

I've been thinking of doing some really short films or commercials to build up some things to show potential clients, etc. Is this a good option?

It IS a good idea to create a reel ... maybe even several.
In a best case, the reel is customized to highlight exactly the skills you want a specific audience to buy into from you.

Two guidelines include...
Start out with your absolute best stuff first. "Best" as in the one highest quality shot you have that best fits your prospects needs. Then build "depth" from there.

Do not put in shots that need explaining or excuses. Better to have short reel of solid material than a long reel of so-so shots. A single sub-par shot on your reel can kill all interest.

Put your full name and contact info (email & phone) on the case, the media (tape or DVD) and at the beginning and end of the video.

Be sure you have permission to include the content from everyone that has ownership of the material on your reel.

So ... what kind of work to you want to do?
What have you done?
Who do you want to hire you?
