Good Evening Everybody,

Just received my new XL-1s today! Wee Haa

I will be using this for filming quick instructional videos to be accessed from website.

I am new to editing video so any advice on equipment and or software would be very appreciated.

I have been looking at this site since '99.

I can now speak, as I am an owner now.

Congratulations! Its a XL! The best advice I can give you, is to shoot against a solid background. It will help in compressing the video for the web, and help the subject stand out.

Looked nice. But (aren't there always but's?):

- the camera jolted a bit (flimsy tripod?)
- lighting was a bit hard or over exposed it seemed
- light missing on the right side? (the persons sometimes
seemed to throw a little shadow on the area she (?) was
working on)

just some thoughts I had....

Would it have been better to film this out side using natural?

No problem Michael! I doubt you would have had better results
outside, because lights tend to be very harsh there. You can do
a lot on the XL1s to reduce overall brightness. Personally I always
shoot in manual mode which gives me the greatest control. Set
gain to 0 or -3 db and then work your iris and shutter speeds to
get the desired image. Make sure you check the exposure using
the built in meter. An external monitor is very nice to have if you
truly want to judge the image!

About lighting. I have to walk that path myself. But I did notice
some shadows which got in the way which I think could have
been helped by a light on the right side. I would have put a light
to start at the left and at the right for such a shoot... But some
experimenting might have yielded another interesting place for
those lights....
