Sounds bad

Hello Everyone

I am new to dvinfor, but I am ready to learn as much as I can. I have made my first video for my church. I shot a retreat that we had for couples. The members loved the DVD but I had serval issues with it. The main one was sound. My canon XL2's mic gave me a sound out doors on a interview that picked up back groung noise that I had to compress it to use it in the video.

So I need advise on what equipment I can buy that will give me better sound on my next project. I bought a hand held mic and a studio mic and know that I need a shotgun, I want the best quality I can afford 300-600 dollar range.

Thank to anyone who can point me in the right direction.
