2006 Kino-Kabarets

Hello,

Kino is a non-profit community of video professional and hobbyists. The movement was born in Montreal in 1999. Since then, the idea has spread like wildfire and there are now more than 50 Kino cells over 4 continents. Most Kino cells have monthly screenings where local members can show their short movies (in Montreal the screenings attract 400 audience members on average). The Kino motto is: "Do well with nothing, do better with little, and do it right now!" For more details on Kino, see www.kino00.com for the Montreal mother-cell (in French) or www.wis-kino.com for an American offshoot.

Beyond the community aspect and the screenings, the core event of the Kino movement is the Kino-Kabaret. Often associated to a local even such as a film festival, the Kino-Kabaret can last from 2 to 10 days and welcomes video-enthusiasts from all over the world. The Kabaret is basically a video production marathon with screenings every 48 hours. In the Montreal Kabaret this past October, over 90 short movies where produced over a 10 day period. Tona Williams from Wisconsin made the following short documentary about the Kino-Kabaret in Montreal:

There is no competition in the Kino world, so the emphasis is on cooperation. A Kabaret attracts directors, technicians, actors, musicians, art directors, etc. There is usually a production facility where the participants can install their computers. Most Kabarets will provide equipment (lights, sound kits, cameras, sometimes editing stations). Food and accomodation are usually provided by the Kabaret (but don't expect to sleep much).

There will be many Kino-Kabarets this year. Here is the list so far. I will update it as more get announced. If you are interesting in attending, please check the associated website and contact the organisers (you can also write me at jeanfr at cae.ca).
