A strange e-mail

I got this email today. Just wondering if anyone else has received it. I'm curious to know whether it's true, or a hoax, or a fancy scheme to collect email addresses. here it is:

Hello, My name is Krista Marie and I have a new born baby named
Natalie. She means the world to me, and just recently, the doctors
have discovered that my little Natalie has Brain Cancer.
Unfortunately my husband and I don't have the money to pay for the
bill. But my husband and I have worked out a deal with AOL and
they
have agreed to give us 5cents to each person that received this
e-mail. So please, forward this to everyone you know, and help out
my
little Natalie and I.

I have recieved a number of strange emails, usually from the attorny of some very well to do person, who has either died, or been missing. They came to me, because of my wonderful reputation... That right there proves it is crap!

Yours does sound suspicicious, but more viral than scam. You could always contact AOL and ask about it.

I don't even open 99% of my e-mails, and if I do, My Internet provider has already determined if the e-mail is spam---but I never open HTML e-mails, unless I know the sender. In other words, I have HTML shut off in my e-mail program. :)

I put a hex (outlook blocked list) on people who send me those <;~)

Thanks, thought so!

For these types of emails if you are EXTREMELY interested, you can always paste the first couple lines into Google and see what comes up. Invariably, they are already documented in Snopes or other hoax debunker websites.

Keith, you need to find another hobby for Dylan. He obviously has too much money in his pockets if he's thinking of responding to hoax emails.

Keith Loh October 19th, 2003 12:34 PM

He has a wife. You would think he has no free time at all.

Dylan Couper October 19th, 2003 12:40 PM

I wanted to debunk it before I sent hate mail to the guy that sent it to me in the first place.

I could use another hobby to blow money on. Painball season is over... Snowboarding season hasn't begun yet...
Rally car racing... That's what I need to take up!

Don Berube October 19th, 2003 05:04 PM

Dylan,

Maybe you could offer to teach little Natalie how to snowboard?

Dylan Couper October 19th, 2003 05:52 PM

Keith, thats why I bought my wife a horse. Now I have loads of free time.

Don, snowboarding lessons are always available, although I'm going to be in heavy training this winter to challenge Adrian Douglas for the DVinfo World Snowboarding Championship. :D

Just think of it like this... Would AOL do that? The chance of that
would be very small because they would get a lot of people
asking them for stuff. Also how would they know how many
people got the e-mail?

It has not genuine written all over it, as other people found out
by looking it up.

Michel Brewer October 22nd, 2003 12:37 AM

AOL would never do that

at least I dont think they would and I worked for the subsidiary news thing. If they did they were keeping 3 cents out off the 5, now if your really looking for something to send I have this great one from the former treasurer of a republic in africa who needs help getting funds transferred...
