hack filmmaker

I have a question for you all.
I've read this review of "Lady in the water" and the reviewer used the term "non-hack filmmaker". What does it actually mean, a non-hack and/or a hack filmmaker.

I think a hack filmmaker is the derogatory term for one who only does work for hire, does it rather poorly, and has no creative vision or ideas of their own.

Probably sprang out of the auteur theory which claimed that a filmmaker is ultimately the sole driving creative artist behind a film, regardless of the other people who are on set.

I have to agree with reviewers statements on "Unbreakable", it came so close after Sixth Sense, it got overlooked by a lot of people including me. I saw it on cable and it was pretty good. The Village deserved to be panned, if for no other reason than its' entirely improbable concept.
