Libec tripods: what's the skinny?

I'm purchasing an HVX200A and I need a good tripod to go with it. Unfortunately, my organization's budget won't allow for a good set of manfrotto or cartoni sticks. Saw this Libec tripod on BH and wondered what y'alls opinions on Libec were.

It'll hold the weight of my camera, has a fluid head, and looks okay by the specs. Any known problems with Libec? Any other recommendations for a good tripod in the $500-$800 range? Ideally I'd like to get some more vertical height than this Libec will allow... if I could get close to 80" with the sticks + head that would be awesome 'cause I anticipate having to shoot over crowds from time-to-time.

I bought the Libec LS-55 but with the mid-level spreader. It is an upgrade over the Manfrotto to me.

I like it a lot, good price too.

David,

I'm using that same tripod with a Canon A1 and have been pleased with it. Keep in mind I'm a rookie and this is my first tripod. So, lol, my opinion probably doesn't mean much. The best thing to learn from me is that I have no complaints with it. I remember reading an article on them though, before I purchased. It was rated favorably by the reviewer.

Love 'em

David,

I have two Libec 38M that I use with my XH-A1 and I love them . I have the Manfrotto 503 for 4 of my other cameras and when I have to use them I cringe. The best thing about the 38 is that it is always right. There is no guessing or wondering if you have the same settings . It is just set up with the perfect amount of resistance. Hope this helps.

Got one, love it. Using Canon XH A1 with no accessories (yet), and it's lovely. Couldn't see anything near it at the price

Libec LS38 hands down. I own one and it is a superb tripod. I've worked with tripods whose fluid heads cost double the price of the LS38 and they still weren't as good.
