Tripod recommendations welcome
 

Can anyone recommend an inexpensive tripod for my next GL2 wedding? Been so long since I bought one. My old one is kinda long in tooth. Should it be a fluid head?

Lots of threads in this Forum on the subject. If you plan to move the camera via the head while filming, I'd say yes.

I own a 3181 bogen leg set along with the 503 and so far it has been decent. The only glitch is the slight "stiction" on the tilt when you let it sit for a while, that is in high fluid drag. I recommend the legs very, support around 40 lbs these legs will serve for life. Now the head i am wondering about, i really thought they put some "special" care into 503 to eliminate stiction from 501. Anyone know anything about this or how i could eliminate this effect? It isn't terrible but it sure isn't acceptible for my use. Along with that i would go for a leveling head such as 3205 bogen. All of that came out to be around 550 dollars. There are millers and others that go over 1k, my limited budget doesn't allow that.

Yea, spend 3 to 5 hundred pounds on one and get a dolly (wheels). Or if your like me and determined to get a canny tripod without breaking the bank try the Th650 by Libec. I got it for u £100 as special offer, but is worth a little more i think.
Pros, It is lightweight, in that you can grab it with one arm and run aroung with it. Folds up quickly. Has a quick release plate for the camera. Is very easy to get level (has a bubble at bottom of head to assist) by adjusting a knob beneath where the head unit attaches. Is very smooth to pan, and has long legs for when you need them. You can take it out walking or whatever as is lightweight.
Cons, on a very very slow pan the head is a little jittery.

Right also the 3181 is the silver model of 3182 which is black the one i have is 3182. Make sure you get it in black, i heard there are issues with reflection when lighting sets.

Stiction is always going to be a problem with tripod heads that are not true fluid-heads. You cannot solve the problem and neither can Bogen. It's the nature of the friction-disk design.
