Cartoni HiDV fluid head, issues.

Hi, I finally picked up a fluid head, the Cartoni HiDV fluid head. Using it with 5DmkII and 24-70 & 70-200 f2.8's.
All balanced and noticed theres some friction point from balanced point thru to 45 degree tilt forward. Its noticeable to the point where there's a sound from friction. Its very present with no drag and tiny bit less with all variations of drag when tilting. Not too noticeable with a very, very slow tilt. But a quick or fast tilt forward, the noise is there. Very annoying. Its loud and clear when recording in quiet room. Tilt down, and friction sound is present in video. Not too happy about this. Also noticed the issue with driftback @ 200mm in pans. This was mentioned in reviews on the Cartoni Focus heads.

Is this normal or defective? Am I doing something wrong?
I'm assuming my tilt action should be as silent and smooth like the pan action. Should be fluid, smooth, silent on both axis, and NOT different actions from each axis. :(
Just got this head delivered hours ago. Am I too critical. I can hear the tilt sound effect when I record in this movement.

Anybody with Cartoni experience can help me out? All I've read were good reviews on Cartoni, except that driftback effect.

Thanks.
Dave.

Hi David...............

That'll be a "return to vendor" then.

Change it for either a Sachtler or a Vinten, you'll sleep better at nights.

(Discussed ad nauseum in related threads).

I rented a Cartoni system with the same head for an HVX a couple of years ago. We tried to do smooth diagonal moves. Forget it. The head had stiction problems. All diagonal moves ended up as stairsteps no matter how we adjusted the drag. I liked everything about the system except the feel of the head.

ya, its going back. I sent off a quick email to Cartoni, and they got right back pretty quick. Told me to send it back, probably defective. Not so sure I'll try that again.

My search for a head continues. Hmmmm.
Sachtler fsb-6, Vinten vision 3as, Miller ds-10, or new Miller Compass 15?

Poor Cartoni HiDV performance

David

Contact me off line and ill see what I can do for you. I think we have a few of the outgoing Vision 3's available still. With a #1 spring, its ideal for the Canon 5D.
