Too Much Variety for the Newb

Having browsed through some threads on recommended tripods, it appears a Bogen Manfrotto is the way to go. However, there are a dozen different models that I've seen so far, and the only thing I can distinguish between any of them is their price. All seem to have fluid heads, some may indicate a sturdiness not possessed by the others, and some may be larger or smaller. I have a Canon XL2, recently purchased, and am wondering what tripod I should purchase. I want smooth uninterrupted pans and tilts; I want something to perform sturdily in many number of environments; I want to mount on a dolly; and I want to have the option of a quick release. All this for less than $200 on eBay! Any suggestions?

The tripod head is a bigger deal than the sticks, IMHO. If you are looking at Bogen 503 head , price is $250 just for that. 501 is cheaper at $150. DIfferences between the two are easy to compare (look on B&H, 503 has a counterbalance system).

Then legs are easier too, once you have decided on head. Sturdy means heavy, so you can get too sturdy (heavy) depending on your goals. Shooting hurricanes witha 20 pound camera needs more support than shooting inside with an XL2. Weight limits and weigth of unit will give you idea of which legs you want. no support, triple support, geared center pole, etc....

I bought a $100 fluid head tripod when I didn't know any better, but it suits my needs for now. I just got a monopod with legs, and own a Glidecam 4000. When I replace the tripod I will probably go with a 501 or 503 head and some kind of legs, but I don't know enough about what I will be shooting then to buy it now. Monopod actually suits my needs much of the time (outdoor events, music fests, steet fairs).
