Tripod for travelling, plus other question

I seriously don't have the cash to buy a tripod right now but I want some pointers what to save up for.
I needa tripod for my Canon XF300 but I do a lot of travelling and will be using the camera overseas a lot.
I need a tripod that is sturdy enough to hold the XF300 but is as light as possible. I also need something that is short when packed down so that it can fit in a backpack or at worst a normal sized suitcase. I need to be able to take it on a plane so packed size and weight are an issue.

For any of you who take your video gear on planes how do you do it? What do you pack it in etc? That goes for tripod and camera body.

Thanks for your help,

Andy S
