Manfrotto rubber shoes on Sachtler tripod
 

Has anyone tried Manfrotto rubber shoes on Sachtler tripod spikes?
CF Sachtler legs w 100mm bowl.

Yep, I've tried.

It doesn't work. Totally different foot geometry, despite both being double spike feet.

Vinten, yes. Libec, yep. Sachtler, nope.

For some reason I suspected that would be the case. It might have been the $300 difference in price that tipped me off.

In the interest of beating this subject to death, or worse ... was it an issue of the stap pin/axle not wide enough to bring the stap around the massive width of the obese Sachtler lower leg block, thereby flinging the shoe across the room?

Or the Sachtler spikes wouldn't sit correctly on the Manfrotto foot before even trying to snap the strap on?

The easiest way to do this is to show you.

The Sachtler spikes are finer and closer together than the Manfrotto pattern, plus the thong attach ledge on the Sachtler is much much closer to the floor, hence the much reduced thong length.

The Manfrotto pattern (tho' actually the Vinten boots) on the left, the red Sachtler on the right.

Looks like those red feet go to the DA 75. I'm using a CF 100, which uses the feet shown below. It seems I might still have an issue with loose straps on the Manfrottos.

Finding a kludge for loose straps might be more elegant than the system I am working on now - using PVC, tree branches and duct tape.

Unless you see another reason they might fly across the room and take someone's eye out, I'll order a set (B&H $23.30 with shipping) and dissect them.

I cannot see any way you're going to get a set of Manfrotto pattern boots to fit any of the Sachtler sticks.

No danger of boot/ eye contact, more like falling off like over cooked pasta.

Face it, you ain't gonna get the Sachtler Cinderella feet into the Manfrotto army boots, no way, and even a pumpkin and an A - team of white mice ain't gonna help.

Quite how Sachtler can justify $332 US for a set of three rubber feet has me utterly mystefied, that's over $110 EACH!

Think I have a better chance with duct tape. I'll report back on my success, or more probably lack thereof.

The prices do seem a bit silly to me... but then it's a very small market and they're specialist parts. Sometimes a "Heath Robinson" solution can be a worthwhile gamble.

A spare camera mounting plate for my Vinten VB is a snip at 80 or 90 UK pounds, before delivery!

Oddly, success happened. With a few minutes of dragging my CF 100 around the local home improvement store upside-down, I discovered a 1-1/2" PVC or ABS pipe coupling would snap over the spikes and hold tight.

Hmm. A 1-1/2" cap would be a great, almost one piece solution (still need a rubber pad), but the spikes were too deep for a cap to snap over the lower leg bracket. Rats.

Looking for black ABS pipe couplings and caps in the Drain-Waste-Vent section, I noticed 1-1/2" black rubber pipe caps. Being more flexible, they still snap fit, but less reliably so these would need a bungee strap. But hey, no paint, glue, finding/fitting rubber pads. It can't possibly be this easy.

Bought three for $2.70 each, including a lovely stainless hose clamp on each. Not sure what I will do with the FREE hose clamps, but you can't have too many spare hose clamps, right?

Punched two holes in each cap (already had the punch) and crimped a short piece of small bungee (already had the bungee) onto each one. Voila! The $9.00 Sachtler dancing slippers. No A-team of white mice required.

Well, I gotta hand it to you............
 

That is one heck of a solution!

You've just put Sachtlers rubber boot program into a tail spin from which it will never recover.

Magic.

As they say, neccesity is the mother of invention, or sommat close, and you've proved it in spades.

So, how long before Sachtler owners can buy these at B&H for say, $50 bucks a set?

I was thinking of marketing them direct at no more than $300 a set. Seem reasonable? (Note to Mr. Rex: Just humor. Not real advertising.)

The mother in this case was more fear than necessity.

I have been shooting with a Video 20 II head, CF 100 sticks and upcycled mid-level spreader from a broken brand-X tripod for about 20 years. Great rig and carrying it around keeps me from needing a gym membership.

A few days ago I was shooting an interview with a doctor in his gorgeous, newly acquired, completely restored 1932 home in Palos Verdes, CA. It has 180 degree ocean views and freshly restored original 1932 hardwood floors. Absolutely perfect floor refinishing work by the way. Just beautiful.

For the last couple of decades my camera bag has held 3 small carpet squares that I toss under the spikes for these sorts of occasions and have surprisingly only needed them a dozen times or so.

In 4 hours of moving the camera around, keeping the feet on the squares, discreetly toweling perspiration ... I came to the conclusion that refinishing that floor would take the profit out of an entire month of video shoots and maybe I should just buy some feet.

A quick Google to price feet and ... well, here we are.

I did get a very nice email from Barbara Jouman, with Sachtler, offering to look for some b-stock feet. I thanked her, but let her know I had already fitted the plumbing supplies and thought I could get by. Clearly she is following these forums and being helpful.

I bought a real nice set of feet for my Sachtler tripod off ebay a while ago. They fit perfectly and were cheap. The foot pad is square and has a hole so you can bolt them to a cart. If anyone is interested I'll dig through my records and see if I can find where to order them.

Hope you see this Oren, I tried emailing you a reply but it wouldn't go through, and I could not contact you through DVInfo either.

The feet I bought do not match the originals at all. They are made for using as a tie down. I thought the quality is good. Here is the link:

They are big but fit the tripod well.
