Looking for an inexpensive tall tripod.

I need a tall tripod that will generally be used for a lockdown camera at weddings. The Gitzo Series 4 6X Systematic 5-Section Tripod extends to 7' 9" but it costs $1,200 which is more than I want to pay. I would appreciate any suggestions.

I have often thought about rigging a head mount to my large aluminium step ladder, but have never managed to get round to it. I think mainly because I'd need to transport it on a roof rack. But if you are looking for locked down, then some sort of clamp that can be attached to a door frame/tree/light fitting etc. ? In fact one well know local photog has one of those big framed roof rack, and sets up his tripod on that!

Benro aluminium tripods are great, and for a locked camera their heads are okay. I wouldn't recommend the heads for panning or tilting though.

I have a Manfrotto 3246/501hdv combo that extends to 8 feet. You could of course use another head but the legs get up there and aren't that costly. Works well for lock down but I've also used it as a primary when needed.

Thanks Don! That is exactly what I am looking for.

I also use the Manfrotto 3426 sticks and highly recommend it. I have a Satchler 6 that cost 3 times as much but 95% of the time I end up using the Manfrotto because of the height the geared head will rise to.
