A "Sticky" question

Ok, I know I've been asking more than my share of "newbie" type questions around here but bare with me as I am a newbie to dv. I will have my GL2 in the next few weeks and I have a question about sticks. I have a full size Bogen/Manfrotto 3066 that I use for my Hitachi Z-One beta at work. Is my GL2 going to look like a matchcar on it? This tripod is pretty heavy but I've done my share of hauling it around so that's not really a consideration. I guess my question is this. Since I'm getting the GL2 to do side small event work (weddings and what not) should I invest in sticks that are meant for the smaller dv cams or use just use this mammoth but great quality tripod I already have access to. I know, I know, part of going into business for yourself is making these executive decisions on your own... sigh

Max,
I also have (among other heads/sticks) a Manfrotto 3066 head on probably the same sticks you use. I've never used it with my GL2 but, yes, your GL2 will look like a matchcar on it. (It makes me smile just envisioning it.) The 3066's design capacity is far beyond the GL2's load. Since the 3066 is not spring balanced it should not pose an unbalanced (boing!) problem but you'll find yourself spending more energy just tilting and panning that 10lb head itself.

I guess I'd recommend waiting until you actually get the GL2 to make a decision. A smaller head will certainly better suit your needs. But you might decide to research that separately and make-do with the 3066 in th meantime (also give your checkbook a breather).

p.s. I moved your thread here because it's a better venue for the subject.

Ken,

You reaffirmed what I was thinking. There's also an older Bogen from the dark ages lying around here that I might be able to make work. It's a bit smaller. You're right about the checkbook too. My initial budget is around 3 grand so I need to make my initial accessory purchases smart. I know what some would say. Get a less expensive camera and more accessories. I'm really set on the GL2 though so I'll just have to put my kit together a little slower...
