Unknown Bird

Good Morning,

Two days ago we had these small birds show up in our yard. In 28 years in this location I have never seen them. I Looked in the bird book I have and no luck.
We had 35 click winds yesterday but I shot them anyway as I am affraid they will be gone at any time. They are very small, warbler sized, very tame, unaffraid of even the cats!! I suspect they must be northern.

Wonder if anyone knows what they are???

view them here.

Hi Dale,

That would be a Nuthatch.

Looks like nuthatch to me too, but a New World variation.

Guys,

Thank you so much!!!!! It makes my day!!! Are they forest dwellers??

They nest in old woodpecker holes, but make the holes smaller by plastering mud on them. They go up and down tree trunks looking for insects and larvae.

Good evening,

Over here it is called a Red Breasted Nuthatch. I got an email and apparently they are not all that uncommon here and can be here year round. Guess I have enough trees and bugs in the yard now to attract them. What a great little bird!!!!!

Thanks again.

Dale,

They don't seem to be afraid of humans
