Great shots Mick, were you in a blind to get the shots or are you some distance away ?
Where in West Sussex were you, I was just in West Hoathly two weeks ago and will be back on the 15th in Sharpthone and over in Dorken filming Roe deer. Absolutly love the Ashdown Forrest.

Cheers...Max

Hi Max,

No I wasn't in a blind/hide. This sett has been watch by just one person for a couple of years now and he knows their movements well. We were downwind of them, they came to within three metre of us. If they knew we were there they did not show it. This is just one clip of over an hours footage.

We live near Arundel, but for the last six years have been based in the New Forest.

Its quite a coincidence that you mention Roe Deer we have just returned fro a walk where we had the good fortune to watch one in a corn field only a few metres from us. She was totally unconcerned of our presence until a cyclist passed when she moved away. No cameras with us though.

Are you filming a project over here as I see your location is Calaforina? How long will you be filming the Roe for as they should be rutting by the end of the month.

Hey Mick, you know I've been filming in and around the farm lands of West Sussex 4 or 5 times in the last few years and have never seen a badger, 3 meters thats awsome.
We will be in country for nine days, we are filming a show on the habits of the English roe deer and the effects of the UK's managment programs implemented to control the populations. The deer populations have exploded in the West Sussex area with no natural peditor save the fox, and are in danger of large scale die offs from illness. With the demise of the forrestry for wildlife tax a few years ago, the wooded habitat is shrinking and deer problems in rural areas are increasing. There were 20,000 deer-auto accedent's in 2008 and the numbers are rising.
So the networks idea is to show what managment programs are being used effectively to handle the deer populations. Whether private land owners herd mannagement or governmental programs such as conservation through utilazation programes ie; controled hunting programs to genarate revenues for communities to safely mannage numbers, are usefull tools.
They will put all the footage and data together and air it on Direct TV.

I will be spending time with a local deer stalker and game manager to observe the rutting rituals.
I'll send you some footage of "deer porn" if we can get the mateing prosses, which is number one for us.

Cheers......Max

Hi Max,

Hope all goes well for your filming. The badger was in fact in the west country, not Sussex. There are setts in Sussex as can be observed from the road kills, but you would need to get permission to enter on the land.

Nice clips Mick. I'm off on a badger shoot with the 7d soon. It will be good to see how the camera performs in the dusk light.

Was this h1 ?

Could you let us know how the 7 performs

Hi Mick

I certainly will fella. Hopefully I'll be shooting it next week.

I used it properly this weekend for the first time filming Silver Studded Blues and it can produce great results.

It is always nice to view footage of one of my favourite UK animals, Mike.

Nice and intersting clip, although to maintain longer interest I'd like to have seen far more variety, including wides and close-ups; plus be tempted to get rid of the cars and background road noise by dropping some better natural sounds onto the timeline.

I've spent many years tracking, studying and photographing badgers, especially during my early days of wildlife photography during the 70's and 80's. They are facinating animals to watch all year round, even during snow-storms. Some of the best viewing I've experienced is in the Cotswolds and North Downs, although I've also photographed them in other countries of Europe. I'm always amazed just how few people see or understand them, even when they have sets within yards of their garden! :)

Hi Tony, thanks for watching.

As I said in an earlier post this is just one clip of over and hours footage that will be used in project that I am involved in. I posted to show what could be achieved filming with +6 gain. I have now played around a lot more and managed to get a bit more colour into them, they are now more or less as I viewed them. The sound was a problem, although we were some distance from the road. Again this will be replaced with a wild sound track recorded in a similiar location.

Kind regards

Mick

Nice stuff! Maybe better without the sound track but do I hear a Tawny Owl in there?

Ron

Mick Jenner July 28th, 2010 02:07 AM

Hi Ron,

Yes there was an owl and but the main noise came from a green woodpeckers nest nearby.
