Object lighting in the field ?
 

I wonder if it's possible to light up a small subject on a cloudy day, so it looks like a ray of sun hits it .. ?
Is there a field/compact solution for this, or does it take too much power/batteries to carry around?
It would be great for outdoor macro to create more depth ..

Funny you should ask this question, as i was wondering the exact same thing just yesterday when i was up filming & the light was horrible. Try this link. Looks to be some solutions for sure.

Hi Martijn,

I am currently trying a new system for macro and semi-macro work - see photos. The lamps shown have the advantage of adjustable intensity but as Bryce has said there a lot available. the idea certainly is practicable.

I am very curious what that metal thing is in the picture, did you construct this yourself and what does it do?

Hi Noa,

The ‘metal thing’ is a current construction project of mine to use for close-ups. The camera is a converted GoPro and can use ‘S’ or ‘C’ mount lenses and is mounted on a short fluid-damped boom. It is set up so that the masses at the boom ends are in balance enabling the camera to be positioned at any point without clamping. As shown the camera can be raised from ground level to about 30 cm and panned left or right. Very slow pans and tilts are possible or should I call these movements slides? In addition to the damped movements I can preset a static tilt and/or a static pan.

Currently it is set up on a short heavy tripod using a 75 mm ball. I plan to be able to use it on other tripods.

Focusing is achieved by mounting the camera on a motorized ball-slide with a 50 mm travel – the control box is shown at the bottom right of the 1st photo. The GoPro remote is attached to the control box also. Various focusing speeds are possible. It is also possible to move the camera forward or backwards in steps of either 0.2 mm or 0.8 mm. I hope to try ‘photo-stacking’. Another potential use for the small steps is to subtly change focus during time-lapse shots.

The black box in in central fore ground contains a DP6 field monitor and other devices. It can be tilted through about 90 degrees.

That's amazing, you should put it on kickstarter and get it into production.
