UWOL #11 : "This Place Is For The Birds" by Chris Barcellos

After bitching about the narration requirement, I solicited my good friend and local actor David Lawlor to provide the narration for this film. Thank you Dave for your contribution !

Hi Chris:

Beautiful filming and beautiful subject matter. This was simply lovely! The music selection, narration, all were top notch. The lighting in your film was used really well and made the colors so warm and very rich. I can't think of a thing to criticize! My favorite part was at the end when the black birds took off but not the cranes ... what a cool effect. You wove slow motion with normal nicely. It's my favorite one! But to be honest, yours is the first one I've watched so far ;-).

Chris,

What a great job!!! The audio is fantastic. Must be nice to film where wind doesn't ruin the audio most of the time!!!!!

There is some noticable camera movement on some of it; but heck, aren't these "Moving Pictures"? So it doesn't really change my impression of your film!!

I really like it big time!! Makes me wonder why I even enter!

Chris,

Enjoyed you film. Nicely edited with good narration. Looks like a lovely place and you captured it well. As Dale said, great audio, it was really nice to hear clear birdsong. Well done!

Hi Chris,

I can just agree with what has been said already.
The crisp, bright colors, the great audio quality, a very well delivered VO.
You did very well this round!
As Dale mentioned, some camera movement could have been a bit more smooth, but that's just details. (As example, the zooming in from 0:42 to about 0:52)

Thank you for teaching me more about your area!
Well done!

HiChris,

I like your film and your presentation and the music. Particularly the colors in the beginning. All the flying birds give life to the scenes of the cranes on the ground. It is fantastic when all the hidden birds evacuate the arena.

Chris, nice clean video with warm colours, there was plenty of information about the Cosumnes river reserve,
it was nice to see the cranes, one bird that is rear in the UK and only seen in a few areas, I think on our east coast Norfolk area.

This video not only makes a good entry for this challenge it would make for a good entry in the last challenge PSA.
I still like the Shark tank Video .

I love sand-hill cranes. I really liked the shots where the blackbirds are flying all around the cranes. The stillness of the cranes is a strong counterpoint to those nutty blackbirds zipping all over the place.

Well, I hope it was still a short vacation for you, in spite of the rigors of adding a VO....how bad can wandering among the cranes and blackbirds be??

Hi Chris,

I loved the shot at the end with the back birds surrounding the cranes. It almost looked CG. If this were in a feature film you would have thought so...and it was a dynamic way to end the piece. Often times you hear that it is good form to start and end with your best images and the stuff in the middle should keep the viewer's interest. That being said I would have liked to have seen a more dynamic image at the intro. Like the shot of the birds flying for example.

Besides that the VO was good and clear and it looks like a place I would like to visit as I live just over the hill on the Nevada side.

Hey Chris:

Thanks for a second watch. I thoroughly enjoy it and I love the ending when the black birds take off but the cranes don't. Thank you for this!

See… that wasn’t that hard, was it? ;)
Well done Chris, you did make a really nice film and I think that this one rise the level on you films. A VO can give the story so much and yours did. Well done!

In some part of the film it become a bit static, you could have got some more shots in it…

Over all a well made film.

Chris,

Here you are bitchin about having to do a VO and you put up a well shot, entertaining and informative film.

What's up with that? :)

Some fantastic shots in there! Had some great natural audio too.

Yeah, that last shot was pretty sweet.

I think they could put this film up on the preserves website and people would have a good feel for the place.

Great job!
