UWOL #11 "A Hidden Nook By The Brook" by Oliver Pahlow

Well, I'm not very good at voice overs so I had my alter ego do it for me. Here is a link to a higher resolution version of my entry for those of you brave enough to watch it

I should note that this was a very interesting challenge for me. I made my first attempt to capture the sun rising and because of that I was able to get some great moon shots. I also got lucky with the woodpecker and the moon shot.

Oliver,

A nicely conceived video. I really liked your theme. The image of the branch pointing to the moon was splindid.

the rack focus to the bird house was a real nice touch.

It seems your video was suffering from compression resolution loss. Some of the images seemed somewhat underexposed, but then you may have been going for a darker look.

I enjoyed the voice over, well done.

Very good job, I enjoyed it very much

Hi Oliver:

Well now, this was very well done indeed. You blow me away with your musical talent in addition to your filming. Nice composition throughout and yes, the moon shot along with the wood pecker was the unexpected gem. The narrating was superbly done and rounded the entire piece out for one very enjoyable experience.

Way to go!

Very nice film with some lovely images. The shot with the moon and the woodpecker was great. Good choice of music, worked well with the VO.

Not a massive fan of the fade-to-black transition (apart from using it as a signal the sequence has ended). Perhaps some more GV's of the brook would have worked?.

Thank you all for taking the time to look at my entry and for your compliments and comments. Very much appreciated. I still need to take the time and view everyones work. Things have been a little busy, but I will. Thanks again.

The woodpecker and moon is definitely a stand-out moment, but the one I really liked was the shot of the cluster of mushrooms growing on the tree. The bokeh and the colors are nice and contrasty with the white mushrooms. Great shot.

I'm thinking you could have done a clever match cut between the shape of the moon and the shape of the mushroom which could have transitioned us from sky to earth in a very dramatic way -- you never know if these things work until you try it, but it's just a thought.

Thank you Meryem. I'll try it tonight as an experiment.

Hi Oliver,

Most has been said already. You made a very nice and entertaining video.
It was fun to watch!
You had a good mix of wide and close up shots. My favorite shot is the close up of the mushrooms at 1:10.

And your music, that is top notch as always!

Thank you for sharing.

Hi Oliver,

You have made a fine and pleasant film, and I like your self made music.
I have thought about one thing. The music have a strong rhythm, and in the first movement you have the transitions at the hard beat. I wonder if the scene shifts would be smoother if they where placed in the middle of two beats (for instance between one and two). Your film will still be within the rhythm of the music, but the film will interact with the music.
Don't look at my film. It has no timing of beat at all. I might be wrong about this, but I just wanted to raise the question.

The good: great music track, great images, great story idea.

Where to work it a bit more: firm up the story line along the habitat theme. Sound work needed on thee narration track. The voice (maybe just compression issues ??) seemed a little to flat, and perhap the music in background should have been down more.

Overall nice feel to this film !

Hi Oliver,
As many have said the daytime moon with the bonus Woodpecker in the same shot,
very nice contrast of the mushrooms growing out the trunk of the tree.
Edit transitions to black not a favourite mine a quick fade in out may be better.
Pity you didn’t use more of the 60 mb allowance, as Dale has said there was a resolution loss. Nice short video.

Thank you all very kindly for taking the time to look at my entry and offering your comments and suggestions. I have figured out my compresion problem and will apply it to the next contest entry. But if anyone is interested in viewing it in a larger format here it is:

Thanks again and all the best to all of you.

Oliver,

I went back and listened more closely to you music for your film. congrats to you for taking the time to actually get that done!!! Was it a prior composition or did you make that one for this film??

I think that the music is nice and gentle and supports the mood.

I liked the blind child credit at the end too!!
