UWOL 31 - Nature says fall has arrived - by Trond Saetre

This time I divided my film into two parts.
Part one is located at sea level by the westcoast of Norway.
Here it is still summer and the color green dominates. Filmed a lama family as well, but tried to keep some distance especially when doing the aerial shots to not disturb them so much.

Part two:
We change location to the high mountains of southern Norway. First at around 1100 meters elevation, and then down to 800 meters in the valley below.
Brown colors dominate here, until we look more close around us and find so many different colors.

Hope you enjoy.
All kind of feedback is more than welcome.

PS, this film is outside the judging.

Trond,

Beautiful footage my friend! Loved the colors and you know I'm a saturated color freak. :)

Your VO had a lot of hiss in it so listening with headphones it really cut in and out as you spoke vs the non VO shots.

Great aerial footage, espcecially the lama footage. Is that with a DJI Phantom Vision?

Was the banding from vibration in the later aerial footage? I so need to get me one of these! :)

Hey Trond
Once again you have shown us the stunning beauty of Norway and this time at her colourful best. You have a talent for filming landscape Trond - and a very good eye for composition (framing of your shots). Almost every one of your landscapes could be turned into magnificent paintings! Love the contrast of light and dark in the landscape at 2:04.

I was just thinking that the beginning of Part One could have benefitted by a scene giving the wider context before the close-ups of green and other summer colours – as you did at the beginning of Part Two. That scene at :42 would have done the trick! It is a stunning scene and would have made a very good first impression.

The zoom into the mushroom was a bit fast – actually in general I feel that you use that you should use the zoom less. Otherwise the camera moves are varied and I must say your quadcopter flying is beautifully slow and smooth.

Be careful about speaking for animals – ! I bet those Lamas were unhappy – because the cold is on its way!! :)

Part two started a bit wobbly but the scenery is wonderful. The French Impressionists used to paint their canvases using little dabs of pure colour juxtaposed next to each other so when you stood at a distance the eye mixed the colours together to form a new colour. That is what your film reminded me of. From a distance the eye mixed all those beautiful colours together to form shades of browns but zoomed in, as you say, you can see the variety of beautiful bright colours.

I do admire you Norwegians – you have a double challenge – language and topics!! You have a good command of English Trond. Enjoyed your film. Well done.

Kevin,

The quad is the first version of the DJI Phantom - same as Geir Inge uses. (Not the vision)
I have a Gopro hero 3 black, which I belive gives a much better image quality than the vision. (And gives you a lot more flexibility of the camera usage)

I am painfully aware of the audio quality of the VO. Had to sit right next to a noisy laptop using my camera's onboard mic to record the VO. Far from an ideal solution.

I'll look into the banding and get back to you soon.

Marj,
Thank you for the detailed feedback. Much appreciated!
You have picked the flaws and I agree with your comments.
Part two was all handheld (used some warp stabilizer in Adobe Premiere on some clips), while part one was with tripod and aerial.

Trond-
00:57 - National Geographic
1:46 'still hanging in there' -perfect English.

I need to watch again, great shots and voice over as usual.

I too enjoyed your film, Trond.

Most of my points have already been commented on about the zooms, and fast pans!
But also some excellent shots of the scenery.

Trond you have some beautiful scenery. I also really liked the aerials. My internet connection seems to really flaky lately, even real early in the morning. It seems the videos (not just yours) with a lot of detail and panning are like when I'm on a tripod and I forget the image sabilizer was on and it's trying to correct the move. I was also wondering what might be causing the banding in some of the shots.
Anyway I always enjoy seeing your country. Thanks.

Gordon

Hi Trond.

Once again, you take us to the Hardangervidda mountain plateau. This is Europe's highest mountain plateau and Scandinavia's largest national park, stunningly beautiful with its magnificent scenarios.
I'm so glad you are able to share this beauty with us.
I often have problem with jello when I film with Phantom and GoPro.
It looks like you do not have this problem, what do you do to avoid the problem?

Many thanks for sharing.

Gordon, thank you for the feedback. I'm glad you like it.
I haven't had time to look into the banding issue yet, but I will post here when I find out what causes it.

Geir Inge, thanks a lot.
Earlier I just used the gopro in the underwater housing, hard mounted to the phantom.
Hardly got any jello issues.
Half a year ago I invested in the dji zenmuse (the H3-2D version) and the iOSD mini datalink.
Money well spent as the image now stays horizontally during turns. (Only issue can be the propellers coming into the camera's view sometimes.)
Anyway, the most important factor is slow/gentle flying and balanced propellers. I find the black propellers slightly better than the "1st version white ones".
