Theme - UWOL 34

May has arrived, and it is time for some UWOL FUN!

Sometimes we notice the big picture when looking around us, but completely miss the small details.
It is time to get down to earth and experience a worm's eye view of the world at ground level.
Scratch among the leaf litter, dig a hole, loosen the soil, feel the sea sand slip through your fingers, find out who lives there and what happens in or just above the dirth beneath your feet.

Theme:
"DOWN TO EARTH"

Deadline:
May 31, midnight wherever you are on planet Earth

Vimeo upload:
Send a mail to uwol@dvinfo.net to request the upload details for Vimeo.
(and as always, players are encouraged to also upload your entries to your personal website/youtube/vimeo in addition to the official UWOL Vimeo page)

Thanks, Trond
A nice earthy theme for the month of May! Now to get thinking....

Hi Trond

Just a quick question: is this theme restricted to small stuff only or can we include soil-dependent animals, burrowing animals and ground- feeding and ground-nesting birds too?

I guess we are going to do this one lying on our bellies most of the time! :)

Re: Theme - UWOL 34

No, the theme is not restricted to "insect size".
But the tree-tops or the head of a giraffe, would be way above "down to earth".

Re: Theme - UWOL 34

Thanks Trond - and yes, emphasis would be on the ground and what happens at that level.

Re: Theme - UWOL 34

Marj, I'm sure the theme is open to interpretation any which way that suits.

For example; arboreal creatures come 'down to earth' from time to time, as do airborne creatures. My immediate thought were monkeys or birds, as long as the story revolved around the reason for them coming down to my earthbound level.

From a human-outdoors perspective I could see mountain climbing (the return trip), paragliding (coming in) as fitting the theme too.

Lots of interpretations out there that will leave our fingernails clean!

Re: Theme - UWOL 34

Simon - the preamble to this topic intimates that the film should be focused on things happening at ground level not things coming down to earth as the words "Down to Earth' would suggest. However it is up to Trond to decide what is acceptable so we know from the start.

Hmmmm, this may be a hard one if interpreted as is for me. 6'6" and bad knees from playing sports doesn't make it easy for me to be "down to earth". :)

Re: Theme - UWOL 34

Not having entered this for some time, my recollection was that once the theme was made it was then up to the entrants to interpret it how they can (from the obvious to the more imaginative or symbolic ideas).

So these days is the 'preamble' a means to focus the interpretation of the theme down a specific avenue, in this case that the word 'earth' should be taken literally?

Re: Theme - UWOL 34

It is exciting with a theme that is more abstract.
One can use our imagination in a freer way, and I'm absolutely sure that Uwol once again, will bring us more exciting videos.
I understand what is behind the subject and what is thought, with "Down-to-earth".
Still, just to play a little on the subject.
In Norway we have something called: common sense, practical, straightforward, sober + some more in the same genre.
Does not all these expressions mean the same as "down-to-earth"?
Best of luck to you all.

By the way, good choice of topic Trond.

Sometimes the theme is "wide open to interpret in any possible way", and sometimes you are guided more in a direction. Still there is plenty room for your creativity.
This time, as the theme release said, the focus is directed towards ground level.
(For the record: Under water, the sea floor is "ground level")

Struggling with this theme I was thinking maybe to make a story of creatures eating things that live in the ground ... like most shore birds. Or something on burrowing animals.

Hi all, due to a change in my travel plans I won't be in a position to complete an entry this round. On the theme I thought you might like to see this short promo I produced for a charity back in 2009 highlighting the importance of looking after the earth for all. May give some of you ideas for your entry. Please note the charity has since been absorbed into the Born Free Foundation and no longer exists independently.
