IkanV-8000HD opinions or any other equivalent

Has anyone other than the threads I've read, had experience with this monitor. I have no way of looking at it since I'm in nowhere land. I want to use it both on camera and run a cable for remote monitoring of my Sony V1u's and Sony Z1u.

Ikan 8000HD

Steve,

I have one of the Ikan 8000HD monitors. I use it with my Canon XH A1 and Sony V1, particularly when using 35mm adapter. Very clear image. Good for focus. Color . . . needs work. You can manually adjust color, brightness, etc., but it never seems quite right. Don't count on it for color correction.

With F970 battery it adds a lot of weight and makes it tricky getting balance. If you tilt the screen at all it changes the center of gravity quite a bit and requires rebalancing. With the shade kit it also catches a lot of wind and will cause the camera to shake or skew. I never use it for run-and-gun shots . . . too cumbersome.

The above problems notwithstanding, it is a decent field monitor for critical focus work. Indoors it is easy to see and use for framing up shots without hovering over the camera's little LCD.

I am thinking about fabricating a mount for my rails system to allow mounting the monitor under the camera. Top mounting using the shoe mount is ok, but makes the whole rig rather top-heavy and cumbersome.

Finally: An F970 battery will only last an hour or so when the unit is on. Even when off, it drains the battery pretty quickly. When not in use I remove or slide the battery off the contacts. BTW - Sliding the battery in and out of the bracket on the back can be a real bear until things loosen up with use. It requires both hands and a lot of force to remove.

Hmm, the battery may be an issue, our gigs are like 6 hours or more, so I don't want to buy a 1000 bucks of battery just for my monitor. Hmmm. Thanks for the info.

For the price it's not a bad monitor at all. My first one developed a row of bad pixels. I sent it back (within warranty) and got a new one sent to me in just a few days - no charge. I've made up a cable that powers the monitor off my Anton Bauer powertap and keep the F970 on as back up. Since it's got a plastic cover it won't take the abuse of the Marshall monitors but again for the price it's a good monitor and is a big help in color and focusing with my F330.
