New 23-inch HD Monitor
 

FYI - Apple has just introduced a 23-inch HD monitor. Something to add to the list.

My wife spied me looking at this online last night ("Mac Porn") and cooly asked, "So when should I expect to see -that- arrive?". But I'm sure happy with my Cinema 22 and honestly can't see much difference other than a bit of size. I'm also still smarting from buying the 22 just a few months before Apple lowered the price <ouch!). So, for now, I'll call it a valiant effort in self denial.

But next week I'm spending a day with Sony looking at the new DSR370, DSR570 and their HD cam line...ooohh. <g>

Okay, so what's needed to be able to use those monitors on a PC. AND Please no "why would you want to" comments from you Mac activists.

I really do like Apple products especially since they've gotten extremely into the video/image quality market.

But I still love building my custom PCs

That's a good question. I'd be interested in the answer to that one.

The Cinema 22" and the HD 23" both use an "ADC" connection that, to my knowledge, does not exist in the PC world. This connection provides -a single- connection to the desktop G4 through which power, USB and video signals all flow. That is, the monitors have no separate power cord; they get their juice from the Mac. Also noteworthy is that they provide 2 USB ports (not unusual any more) and their power switch controls the whole Mac's power and sleep funtions. (This can be a bit of a drawback if you just want to shut the monitor off; can't do it.)

So because they are so closely engineered with the Mac they may not be functional on a PC. But, admittedly, I've never researched this.

Well, I know that it's possible.

I was in an Apple store in the mall a couple of months ago and asked them the same question for some of the existing monitors that they had at that time.

But I forgot exactly what the guy said. Something about having a seperate card in your PC or 'something' that you needed...can't quite remember...I wasn't paying too much attention because he was trying to get me to switch to Apple.

I know you didn't hear a why would you want to, but, I'm currently on a PC NLE and with all the problems of capture card compatibility with motherboards and graphics, why go to the hassle and expense of trying to hook up something that wasn't designed for a PC when you could use a proven dual head card with 2 21" Sony's for around the same cost. My point is just why introduce a possible weak point into the reliability of an already shaky platform.

That being said, I'll be looking at one of the 23" HD monitors when I buy a G4. It is a stunning piece of gear.

Odds are that puppy would be hard to smuggle in the shop without being noticed by the warden -- it looks LOTS different than my 19". It would
*really* run well on my G4, though!

They have adapters that let you connect Apple monitors to PC's.
