Do I need an external monitor for web output?

Hello,

I have a Dell 2208wfp and Dell 1905FP lcd's (plus nvidia video card) and dont have a hardware to calibrate them. I don't know if is possible to calibrate just using software and a color bars, but the thing is these monitor dont have all the controls. I mainly did the CC in the 1905FP but now I added the 2208wfp which is bigger and though (wrongly) better and reinstalled the whole system and quality just seem much worse, so I'm trying to calibrate them with no luck. Most of the stuff I do go mainly for web (work with SD and HDV and then compress and scale down for the web), would it be a good idea to still use a reference monitor for color correction? I have an old Sony KX-14CP1 would it be any good?

So to sum up:

1. Are the lcd monitors good enough for video editing and CC?
2. Can they be calibrated without any hardware?
3. What is the best option (quality/price) hardware to calibrate them (I find it confusing since what I find is mainly for photograpy)?
4. Even if the output is for internet/web is it still good to use an external monitor?
5. Can the Sony be use as good reference for an external monitor?

Thanks in advance.

This is an area in which I am completely ignorant too.
This post is relevant:

However if you Google the Panatone Huey Pro all of the results relate to photographic work rather than video. So perhaps it is overkill for video work.
I'm tempted because it would be nice to be able to trust the colours I am seeing on the monitor (a Dell 2407WFP)

Hello Richard,

True...this is very confusing...seem to be quite a lot of offers for photography, but the question remains if they can be trusted or useful for video? the question is also budget related in the sense if theres a solution to avoid spending alot of money but still have something to trust color on (...if possible).
