what is standard operating procedure for editing on your computer in regards to your monitor and viewing correct colors.

First, I shoot in HD and deliver HD content for the web and SD for producing DVD's. I am building a i7 machine and am in the market for some sort of monitor that will allow me to see what my final project will more or less look like before rendering and burning to dvd. I am using a non HD consumer LCD right now ad when i render and burn a dvd the color looks very different.

What is the standard way to do this on a budget? do people buy a consumer HD LCD for editing and general computer use and use a small monitor such as 6 inchish marshal or ikan to check the color? Do you just use a consumer LCD for all of it? Is something like a Sony LUMA used as your general computer monitor? I am a one man band, not a production house so gear your answers toward that end.

As I understand it, consumer monitors use RGB and DVD's use YCrCb color space. Does it even matter if you spend money on a expensive consumer monitor such as a $1100 if it only has RGB color space which isnt useful to checking my DVD's color?

Help is appreciated so I can make a decision and set a budget regarding my computer monitor set up.
