Can't I just use a cheap TV?

Why can't I use a cheap TV from Costco or Walmart as a NTSC monitor while editing? I know it's resolution isn't going to be the greaest, but if a lot of what I'm putting out is gong to VHS, it's just going to be shown on someones TV.

I found this on B&H but for that price I could score something really nice for the family.

This thread may be of interest to you. If your work isn't for broadcast or you can accept inconsistencies in your color workflow than a good consumer monitor may be fine.
