When were the first letterboxing monitors made?

Another quick curiosity of mine.

Im sitting in front of a sony production monitor that looks about 10 years old. I was suprised to find its 16:9 switchable. I was iterested to know if they were future proofing themselves, or did it look like 16:9 was going to show up earlier than it did.

CHeers,

ps. You can actually have old production monitors modded so that the a/b switch or whatever switch you want makes them do 16:9. -interesting

Ben.

Off-topic.

I've just remade the Agus35 for wider prisms. Do you want the old prism block and prisms for your project? It is a bit busted up from the accident at Cunderdin but the one damaged prism, though chipped on one edge is still serviceable.

The prism block should ideally be remade as the craftwood I used is showing some wear and tear. Maybe your engineer friend who built the original could do it. I can send a piece of PVC as well.

Despite the reply from bigpond that bounces back, my email address is still working.
