Legal Use of Music

I am looking for someone who might have some fact-basis on this answer, not so much speculation and philosophy.

I will be filming a dance competition in mid-November. I have tried to do some research and skim over forum discussions, but does anyone know the legalities of using the music.

I am not talking about going back later on and downloading mp3 files, but capturing the audio live at the event as it happens. Am I covered in a similar way that allows a DJ to play licensed music, or am I pretty much screwed, going to have to use the music anyway, and there is nothing I can do?

Any help or direction on where to get help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, all.

Really long discussion that covers some of that here:

Incidental music seems like it's generally ok. Not sure that would really hold up in court, though. //summary from how I understand it.
