What lighting is good for shooting morning's preparation?
 

Any recommendation on lighting setup that is compact and won't take up much space, doesn't generate much heat (complaints from couple it's too hot) and of good and value for money. Kino Flo looks good but they are no cheap.

I've never and I mean never used a lighting setup to do bridal prep in 27 years of weddings. IMO, any lighting setup would be artificial looking and again IMO would take up room and make the bride feel like shes not doing something natural. I have and do use a 35 to 50 watt light with a softbox raised up about 2 to 3 inches above the camera lens, sometimes I'll even bounce it off the ceiling, but I'll open the iris an up the gain if needed. Never had a problem with or any complaints about this method. BUT YMMV :-)

I've never used lights for brides or grooms preps, aside from setting up fancy fake timelapses or playing with shadows to create depth.

I also use the light to create a backlight silhouette or lens flare for certain shots, or to push some light through a garment or material such as hair detail or a veil.

Photographers love us for these ideas and our methods, as its a different way to shoot the inanimate objects (such as accessories and shoes etc)

I don't actually use the light when im shooting candids or actual preps though.
