Has anyone ever heard of this company?

Demand Media Demand Media | Home. I got an email from them asking me to sign up for it. Just wondering if any of you guys have ever heard of them.

I have a firm policy - I don't do business with spammers. Did they have a legitimate reason to contact you, or did they just pull your address off a website?

I don't know how they got my information. I'm thinking its spam, but their site seemed somewhat legit which is why I wanted to know if someone had ever heard of them.

Please take Roger Ebert's Boulder Pledge:

"Under no circumstances will I ever purchase anything offered to me as the result of an unsolicited e-mail message."

I don't care how "legit" a business is (or looks) or how bad I think I need their services; if they spam me they will never get my business.

Great advice. I'll take it.

What a small world. I actually know who these people are, and though I am a noobie here with no track record, I can tell you they are legit. The CEO and staff are absolutely first class. The info on the site is real, and from what I understand, clients seem to be extremely happy with the results they deliver.

The owners are also involved in several other high profile websites - such as Airliners.net | Airplanes - Aviation - Aircraft- Aircraft Photos & News - which has a stellar reputation and following.

Unless I missed it, you did not indicate why they contacted you, and "exactly" what services were offered. From what I understand they recently paid about $50 - $60 million for The Pluck Corp., and that is just one of the recent acquisitions they have made.

Again, the relationship I have with them is on a different level, so I really can't say I've personally used their services, but as far as the basic question of being legit, financially stable, and honorable I would say absolutely.

Hope that helps.

Now comes the inevitable question (and I don't disagree with Chris or Mr. Ebert): When is it spam and when is it marketing? I don't have an answer for this.

My understanding is SPAM is unsolicited mail where you have just got hold of some email addresses. Marketing is based on you sending information to an existing client base or from any person that has GIVEN you their details...

But, occiasionally I will look at spam (and I dont mean porn) there are good websites for that already ;)

I'm probably a bit too edgy when it comes to this, and I do see that this company probably has a legitimate reason to contact video producers (it's not like a random Viagra mass mailing...) But I would prefer a more personal contact rather than just be unceremoniously added to their newsletter because they harvested my email from my website. Something like "Hello Mr. Davis, we've received your contact information because we share a client..."
