I need a new printer. Which one?
 

My Canon Pixma i4000 has just given up the ghost. Had it for a few years and its done good service, but I have a wedding exhibition tomorrow and went to print off 50 sample dvds this afternoon, only for it to die a death.

I need to buy a new printer capable of producing high quality DVD prints.

I am not splashing out on a dedicated DVD/CD printer that does 100 at a time. The ink is always hugely expensive and reports always say they go wrong.

So what should I get? Needs to be able to use generic ink cartridges because I go through them like there's no tomorrow.

My Epson 900 Stylus Photo lasted nearly 5 years and did sterling work, so late last year I replaced it with the less than £50 (PC World) Epson R285. This is 25% cheaper (and much more so in real terms) takes individual inks, is faster, quieter and prints CDs and DVDs with greater accuracy, speed and quality.

I'm gob-smacked at the value. And I can keep using all the Print CD files I've built up over the years. One reason I didn't go Canon.

I'll recommend the Epson R380 anyday! I've been using it for 2 years and WOW. Ofcourse you need to get the right DVDs as well. I'll post some links for you and others, the results are amazing.

do u have pics of the dvd print
i just got the epson r800 2 days ago , prints are great but it leaves horrible roller marks on the watershild disc

im phoning them today, would love also to find out what everyoneis using, and one that prints quality

Thanks for the advice so far. I managed to push start my canon i4000 after running about 8 sheets of A4 throough it with full page prints and going through the maintainance menu about 4 times, unblocking nozzles and just trying to get the ink flowing properly. Every time i now change any of the ink artridges I have thos problem and it has been getting worse.

A new printer is needed but I have half a draw full of Canon ink.

I recommend the Epson rx959 see the above link. If you can catch it on sell I have seen them go for $99 at Best Buy. I love the quality of the print on the DVDs.

I'm going to get a new printer too. I didn't know there were cheapies that printed straight on the disc. However, my understanding is that there's no feeder correct? This is done one at a time? Are there any inexpensive models out there that can print multiples at a time?

Some people like their HPs, but from what I know Epson is a higher quality brand. Anyone care to comment?

David... The RX680 looks very similar to the RX595. Key difference is the wireless printing.

I used to favor HP over Epson because 10 years ago Epsons had a very annoying habit of clanking, wheezing and groaning for at least a minute before it would start printing. HPs didn't. However, the last two Epson models I've had, including the RX595, begin printing straight away. At equivalent resolutions, I've never noticed any significant differences in print quality between HP and Epson, but I've not done any direct or scientific comparisons.

At US$99, the RX680 looks like a screaming deal.

i would go for the Canon Mp600 myself. I too had a ip4000 and it served me well. There was a show called the gadget show where they compared about 30 printers for quality, how long the ink lasted producing top prints etc. The Canon M series came out on top.

Canon printers do not "support" disk printing in the US apparently because of technology licensing issues with Epson. However, you can apparently buy a Canon disk tray online somewhere. I've read eBay is one possible source.

The ad at the link for the 380 doesn't mention anything about disc printing. But it does , right?

The mp600 comes with a tray that slots into the printer for printing discs. They turn out great..
