Coollights LED600

Anyone here using Coollight's LED600 as a fill light for ceremony or reception? I know some folks here use hot lights for the first dance so I'm wondering how these LED panels will work. Do you think the light they give out would not be focused enough for external lighting placed far from the subject given that these panels are design to give out relatively soft light. The "spot" model has a 40 deg light beam ( Dunno if that's sufficiently focused..)

What I mainly like about this is its ease of transport. Dimensions: 10" x 10" x 3.25" Weight: 3 lbs.

I dunno, we can find out at your wedding because I just got a pair of them. I'll add them to the list of things I have to try and squeeze onto the airplane.

Andrew that would be awesome if you could give us your perspective on these lights. A couple of us have posted asking about them but no one ever responded. I guess they are too new.

I'll defiantly do so. I don't usually use off camera lighting for wedding receptions (i.e. toast or first dance) I'm usually fine in 24P with a shutter of 1/24 and if i get in a real pinch gain +3 or at the absolute most +6 with my Canon A1's using available light or sometimes on camera lighting. But, I'm excited to use these puppies with IDX V-lock batteries on lightweight stands! You're supposed to get 2 hours on a standard IDX. Not too shabby!

Andrew, I'd also love to see some real life footage. I shoot with the XHA1 myself and looking at theses lights, still not sure though due to lack of reviews.

HA sweet! that would be awesome Andrew! Can't wait.

I just got done with two hours of green screen interviews... maybe i'll put up some footage and due a review. I am quite happy with the lights, they are a good value, but I think I have an idea of the questions that most people are going to want answered. Maybe I'll work on that.

I'm no lighting expert, a few questions I have.

How do they compare to a 500W Tungsten work light in terms of brightness.
How far can they be from the subject before they have no useful effect.
Can I gel the 5600k floods down to 3600k?
How useful are they during a wedding with emphasis on portability.

A rough video showing them off would be even more helpful.

Ok, so I've spent a few days with these lights and I'm very happy with them. The idea of being able to run a pair of 600watt equivalent flood light off an IDX battery has opened a whole new world to me. These will definitely be my new favorite tool for wedding receptions... especially first dance, and parents dances!

Andrew what did you buy? 5600k or 3600k floods? What would you advice I go for?

Andrew Waite March 26th, 2009 05:15 PM

I got two 5600K floods. I choose 5600K for several reasons... mainly, you can always gel down to 3600K, it would be easier as a fill near windows, it would match or complement on camera LEDs if we where to ever go that route, and a lot of buildings are using florescent lighting that is moving more towards 5600K spectrum and away from 3600K.

a review will be coming soon.

Andrew,

Where did you end up getting your batteries from? They seem really expensive from what I have seen. I am debating on getting one of these and I am trying to add up the cost so any suggestions would be appreciated.
