Videoing shows - any tips?

Hi...

I have an opportunity to video a few shows at a local venue (could be a regular thing) and i'd appreciate a few tips. It will be mainly tribute bands and the odd comedian.

Audio is the thing that concerns me the most. I was planning to take a line out of the mixing desk into my Zoom H2 and also have a seperate recorder for ambiant sound and then synch up in post production but that might be a bit time consuming.

The delivered video will be a 20 minutes 'highlights' rather than the whole production.

Any thoughts gratefully received

Cheers

Pete

Hi Peter,

I'd suggest that you go setup at any rehearsal sessions they may have, or if not - go to some regular shows for your practice. You'll need to check out where you can best set up your Cam and aux equipment, power issues, and what you'll need to do to get good sound.

If you take sound off a board, be sure that all the participants are mic'd. I've done a couple of shows where the singers were mic'd but the music group was not, so the board only put out the singers.

You may find that for different shows you'll need to set up in different ways with different equipment. Same goes for Cam settings, sound settings, for lighting, etc.

Should be a very interesting challenge.

There's a "sticky" right at the top of this forum that may prove helpful.
