Filming a BBQ?! Any creative ideas?

Yesterday I received a call to film an annual BBQ from and older gentlemen who throws this annual event. He has been doing it for many years and he wants it fimed this year. About 100 people will be there, mostly older friends from his native Russia. He mentioned that he had his wifes birthday party filmed this past year and they were less than thrilled about it so I would at least try to make them happy. I thought that Interviews would be the most fun but would love some creative ideas from the rest of you.. any thoughts or good questions to ask them?

What is important abut the event? Is he a big fan of BBQ, the prep, the cooking, etc? then focus on the cooking and people talking about the cooking. Is it more about the people, then focus on showing the people aspects (wide angles, interviews), etc.

I would also try to watch the previous video that he isn't happy with and have him point out what he doesn't like.

I'm sorry this doesn't help with the people or interview aspect but this recent promo clip I shot might help with thoughts on shots of the BBQ, and food prep:
