Recording to an iPod?
Just curious- Has anyone tried using a Linux'd iPod to record to in the same fashion as an iRiver? If so, what was your experience like? Since I have two iPod's, I'm thinking about using them as extra mic sources.

Apple limits its iPODS to voice/mic recording to a sample rate of 8k. There are hack work-arounds to this, but who knows how long before Apple blocks them.
Because of the huge success of iTunes Music Store (which, as a long time time Mac owner, I refuse to have anything to do with), cowtowing to recording labels, and Mr. Jobs's reputed significant investment in Pixar, Apple appears to have closed the door to professional on-site use of the iPod. I use an iRiver. In this case, cheaper and better. |

I'm a long time Mac user (going back to a dual floppy SE - hell, going back to an original Apple and Apple][e). I see the iTMS as Apple finally getting the mainstream acceptance/respect they've deserved for yet another one of their superior designed and implemented offerings. Different strokes for different folks. I'm also a long time 3D guy - actually Strata on a Mac II. I'm quite pleased that I've been rejected for employment by Pixar 3 times :) (all years ago while in college - just didn't have the portfolio - in hindsight, glad I didn't get into 3d for a career). Steve Jobs co-founded Pixar when he left/got fired (something - i have no idea) from Apple while also building up NeXT (coincidently, another system I have had A LOT of experience with). What's wrong with this? The guy is clearly a talented artist. But ultimately, what does any of this matter? You should use an iRiver (as you are) because it does what you want it to do - and it's cheaper to boot. An iPod doesn't work in this capacity - or at least not easily, so it's not a viable option. Any other reason just comes off as drama IMO. |

Unrelated but back to the original topic, I'd actually love a way if there was someway to record DV to an iPod (I've got two - both are earlier Firewire only models). Ahhh to dream ;-) |

Having said that, I'd agree that the iPod is clearly marketed as a music player and there really should be no expectation of it doing anything else. Quote:

[QUOTE=Patrick Jenkins]I don't mean to be rude, but what!? does this even mean? Not to start any sort of flame fest, but what??
If you are going to respond to a comment of mine, have the clarity of mind to quote the entire sentence and state your position. Pulling a phrase out of context does no one any service. |
