I have only used off camera lights at one wedding and it was great (gonna do it again for my next). I had a 50w light which gave off a very hard pointed beamand I used it behind the podium for the speeches and it looked GREAT!, and nobody minded (I had it hidden behind some lattice anyway). THen when the dancing started I pointed it at the dance floor and it didn't really ruin the ambiance because it wasn't bright enough to overcome all the DJ's effect lights and it wasn't soft enough to cast light everywhere...so I had a glamorous rim on every dancer and the DJ got his ambiance still. WIN-WIN
