The most useful gadget is a mic boom arm!

Ball adaptor on the top end, and the bottom end cable tied (releasable ones) to a chunky stand - I use a heavy duty Manfrotto lighting stand. The boom with a small camera on the end is great for getting pole-cam style shots too.
