Mic Backup

I have been using Senn G2 for my mic's for weddings. I use a sony (cheap) recorder as a back-up. My last couple of weddings I could not use the G2 because of static. I really don't like using the sony recorder. My question is I have heard the Zoom H2 Digital Handy Recorder is a really good recorder. Has anyone used this recorder for weddings? If you, can you use it with a lavalier mic? I have also heard the H4 is good. What is the sound quality of thses recorders?

The sound quality of the Zoom H2 and H4 is very good. Their primary problem is their size. They are too big to use on someone. They are great for micing podiums, string ensembles and other applications where a fixed mic can be used. They both can also be used with external mics. The H2 has a mini jack input; the H4 has XLR inputs.

So you can't put them in a coat pocket? I put my G2 in the coat pocket them clip the mic on the front of the coat. Are you saying the H2 is to big to put in a coat pocket?

I have two H2s and a H4n. I often use the H2 on the officiant and simply attach a Giant Squid Lav mic to the officiant and wire it to the H2 and then drop it in their pocket. I think it fits great in pockets and the length of recording time and quality is wonderful. I also use both the H2 and H4 to capture sound from the soundboard at the church and the DJ or Band. Both recorders capture great ambient sound and can be used on podiums as mentioned.

I love them for their quality and versatility. As mentioned, the size on the H4 is a bit bulky and the H2 is not bad. However, there is a new H1 that was just released and it looks to be nice and tiny, but I have yet to try it out.

So, if you are looking for backup or primary audio, I highly recommend both the H2 and H4. Hope this helped.

Here is a picture I found on the web of the H2 and H4 side by side. You can use the H2 in a coat pocket but it will be a visible lump. As you can see, the H2 is much bigger than your G2.

this is what I use. Works great. but only lasts abour 2-4 hours on two AAA. I'm thinking of making a battery pack for it to last 8+ hours.
