Who wants to solve my audio mystery...and be my hero?

I'm pulling my hair out. I have a GL2 and use Premiere Pro.

I may be "against the grain" but I use my onboard mic for a lot of the coverage. Wireless mic for vows etc but my onboard mic had always done well for me.

Recently I uploaded a wedding and the tapes were bad. Audio was crap, tape was choppy etc. All the tapes did this including the one from my second cam so I knew it wasn't the tapes.

I swapped out the firewire with an old one and the tapes uploaded fine.

The next wedding the EXACT same thing happed but the tapes got worse as I uploaded. I bought a brand new firewire and they uploaded much better.

Since then I am noticing that ALL my tapes are uploading with VERY crackly, tinny, vibrational audio. This NEVER used to be a problem. It's taking me FOREVER to clean up in post.

Interesting thing...if I input a camcorder DIRECTLY to the TV and watch a tape that way there is NOTHING wrong with the footage/audio.

Any experience with this?

Since you did the right troubleshooting and found the new FW cable helped and by going directly to a TV let me ask what kind of connection you used to connect to the TV? If it wasn't FW and that can not be done I would try to load to another computer with FW. It might be a bad FW port on the computer. Troubleshooting like this is a pain but you are going in the right direction...1 thing at a time until it's solved.

See if you can use someone elses computer even if it's a different NLE just to see if it works. Bring your new FW cable so you keep the chain intact.

Thanks Don! I will try to upload with the new firewire to the downstairs computer. When I was eyeballs deep in the problem a few days ago I did use a USB cable on the basement computer to upload out of curiosity and you can well imaing that it was crappy JUST because it was USB.

I am just using and A/V wire for the camera to TV connection.

If nothing else works then I would load the audio in the computer the analog way insted of spending time cleaning it up after using FW.

Good idea. That is WAY more time effective!

Mystery solved! It is a faulty F/W port in the camcorder I use as an uploader. Thanks everyone!
