converting client's DVDs to editable format
 

I seem to be on a run of clients who have personal video content ONLY on DVD movie or Bluray movie disc. Essentially, their highest quality master is either a DVD or Bluray movie.

What is the best way to incorporate this footage into an Adobe Premiere project? Do I convert the files or can I just copy them from the disc & then import into the timeline?

MPEGStreamclip can convert VOB files to editable files.

You can import the VOB files directly into Premiere using the Media Browser.

I believe Toast does it with Blu-ray, although I've not actually done this myself, I recently had to lift video off a DVD I recorded and edited a year ago of a Rugby Union International game in order to create a 'morale boost' five minute video short to be played to one of the squads the night before another game between the two sides, the video is played 4th Feb, and the game is 5th Feb.

VOB files on a non-copy protected DVD are simply MPG files with a different extension. Just copy the files and rename.

That would have saved me hours of work a few years ago . . . client brought me a stack of DVDs of his son's high school football games, so I could edit the highlights into a disc to send to colleges. I hooked my DVD player into a media converter box, which went out firewire to Premiere. Captured all the clips manually.

I can't help you with Premiere - but in Vegas you just import the DVD and it copies the entire image over as an .mpg file.
