Comer 1800 Light

I ordered one and it just came in today. WOW! I think I'm going to LOVE this light! Question for those who have this light: do you typically use the it with the filter on or off?

Hi Jeremy

I have a Chinese equivalent and it depends mainly on whether you are letting the camera do an auto WB or doing a manual WB. I personally just use a diffuse filter and even on autoWB the cam corrects the quite high colour temp of the light.

I found that my Panasonics struggled with the 3200K filter in place and work better with just a diffuse filter as most of my weddings are such a mixture of light.

I would just try the light without filters especially at a wedding reception and see if your camera will auto adjust to the light and give decent colour!! My light with the 3200K filter on also gave me a green cast if flouro tubes were present!!

My experience with the filter is mixed, but generally with my Comer 1800, the filter seems to give me best results, but it kind of depends on the camera, as Chris alluded to.

Hi Jeremy,

I don't use the light outside, mainly inside, so I always needed the filter on so it was balanced for indoor lighting. With the filter on, it's great for shooting 4-8 feet away from your subject because in addition to color correcting for indoor light, it also diffuses the light, making it more pleasant, but when I needed to throw the light farther, the diffusion limited the throw.

My solution was to add a CTO gel and then buy a clear diffusion door from LA Color Shop.

This way I am always balanced for indoor lighting and I choose if I need diffused light or more focused light.

Hi Jeremy,
Good choice! I have one and it's briliant! I use filter inside and it gives nice skin colors especially when filming close to the subject.
