Re: New directions ..

I once purchased an hd switcher and tried to switch 3 cameras live, thinking it would save me lots of time in post. I was wrong! Unless the wedding is choreographed EXACTLY as planned, and cameramen are well rehearsed to shoot weddings, my switching was far from what I expected. I ultimately ended up editing all the camera's footage in post. (Luckily for me all cameras were rolling tape, although I was switching live.) The problem with live switching is that everything happens very quickly, and by the time instructions are given to the cameraman and his shot is ready to go live, that shot is finished already. In other words, the TD is always playing "catch up" with the order of events, rather than being on top of the action. To compound the problem, the TD can only see what the camera is seeing, but not what's happening around it, which in essence is like shooting with blinders on.

Don't get me wrong, the switched footage was mediocre to ok, but certainly not up to my standards. The beauty of post production is that you can play back a portion over and over, and perfect the section to your liking. With live switching, you press take, and you end up living with good and sometimes bad footage that is usually not cut in the right place.
